As many of you know, our neighbour Charlie Whinney, in Beck Head, is a wondrous designer and sculptor, working with metal or steam bending wood. Last year he and Alison came over to the States to install one of his creations in a new hotel on the outskirts of Washington. My cousin Allan met up with them and watched them installing the many bits of wood out of the big crate, with the added challenge this time of working with various motors that move the sculpture around each other.
Allan and Sue took us to the Renaissance Arlington Capital New Hotel, where we were suitably stunned by Charlie’s creation directly as you go through the front door – still moving and a cause of some pride for the bellman and other employees at reception. They have requested some biographical details and history of the sculpture, as many guests are interested in the artist – so they were thrilled to know that we had seen the beginnings as bits of wood in a barn in a small hamlet called Beck Head in England’s Lake District!
You can judge for yourself here:
Amazing
After visiting this we walked along the Potomac river to Old Alexandria – upmarket shops and cafes, art galleries and a Vice President having lunch with smart looking security men outside making sure we didn’t attempt to doorstep him with questions on the economy. Hope he is looking forward to the Inauguration on Monday – we are!
